Devil's Reject: For the Same Amount of Money you could buy House of 1000 Corpses

[23 Jul 2006 | Sunday]

Just saw the flick and about all I can say for it is this: "Is this what fans really wanted?" I know a lot of people complained about House. Admittedly I found it hard to digest the first time, but the more I watched it, the more I loved it. It's a straight up remake of the Tobe Hooper classic, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", complete with all of the things that made that one work: the fucked up family, the crazy storyline with kids begging to get gutted, and even the dirty, greasy feel of Hooper's original vision. So then, what went wrong? Keep that same family or at least explain what happened to them and just give me more of that. I obviously liked the first flick, hence the reason why I'm seeing the squel. What really got my goat was that there was just so much crap that seemed glanced over. If this is a true sequel, then what happened to all of the stuff that happened in the original? Grandpa's gone, Dr. Satan's gone (no explanation why for either), hell they couldn't even get half the actors from House and after seeing this one, I can see why. What really bothered me was that all of the originality of the first flick, seems to have been forsaken in the aim of... well, I don't know what the fuck the aim was of this flick. It seemed boring and grotesque for no reason whatsoever and even the torture sequences were bland and pathetic in comparrison to the first flick.

Maybe this is just another in the line of bad summer flicks that leave much to be desired. Do yourself a favor and take the money you would have spent on a ticket and either rent or buy House of 1000 Corpses. Maybe if people stop patronizing crap like this, they'll stop making it. Likely they won't, but here's to hoping.

Update 7/23: I just checked IMDB and saw resoundingly good reviews for the flick... so I guess this IS what people really wanted. I keep reading over and over, House sucked but Rejects was great... man, fuck em all!
