I guess I thought most people had a basic idea of what the Zodiac story was all about. I mean, at the end of the day, I didn't know all of the details, but I knew some of what made the story infamous. I guess I just never realized just how few poeple actually have any idea why the Zodiac has any noteriety to this day. So to summarize, the Zodiac serial killings more or less began in the very late sixties and ran through the mid seventies. The genius of his murders was not just their sheer randomness (a fact that the cops had no clue about until he told them), the fact that they followed cellestial cycles (again the cops didn't figure this out until way later), but also in the fact that he was never caught. The story of the Zodia and his investigation is one for the ages and one the spans thirty plus years... and it sure feels that way in the fucking theatres. Now don't get me wrong, it's a good movie. I mean, do you think I would ever say anything negative about Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey jr.(well, Scanner Darkly sucked), Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, or Gary Oldman? They're all excellent actors. They rocked the house in this movie. The simple fact is, the flick is 3 hours long... and it feels 3 HOURS LONG! It's interesting. It' well acted. It has a great story with dynamic characters, but come on now. This is why we hire editors. Are you seriously telling me that every goddamn scene in that entire movie needed to remain intact. I saw at least 20 minutes that could go without changing the story one bit, which takes me to a sidenote: I can't stand 3 hour movies. I really can't. I didn't have an opinion about the subject a few years ago. Hell, this wasn't a problem a few years ago, but then movie companies started abusing the system. First came Lord of the Rings, then it was King Kong, and something else I forgot about that sucked my life away and killed my fucking tailbone. The problem with 3 hour movies is that most of them are self-absorbed and full of shit. They use that whole human drama cop-out bullshit story to explain away why it took them one hour worth of suck to get to Skull Island. Fuck 3 hour movies, man. I hate them. I hate them all! Final Word - Story? Great and extremely riveting. Music? Fantastic. Cast? Couldn't be better. Pacing? Dragged a bit, slow to the draw and that's what hurt the movie in my opinion. A few nips and tucks here and there would have done a world of good.6/10 Side Recommendations: Silence of the Lambs, Manhunter |
