Ten Bucks a Ticket Movie Reviews: MI:III, Is It Like MI 1 or MI 2?

[05 May 2006 | Friday]

I see you standing there. You're thinking to yourself, wondering just how good or bad MI:3 is going to be. You've been taken down this path before: movie that sounds good on paper + a solid trailer that actually got you excited + tons of hype.... but somehow with all of the signs of a possible hit, you were left with a deflated, empty feeling as you walked away, likely shaking your head as you try to make logical sense out of the crap you just witnessed.

So here we are again: the summer is upon us and you're wondering if this is going to be another summer full of stinkers like last year or if this is going to be like years past where you actually had fun at the movies. Well, I'm going to say this... do you remember True Lies? How about T2? Do you remember a time when summer blobkbusters didn't exactly solve all of the world's problems, but at least they were fun as hell for the ride? Well, say hello to those days once again! MI:3 was actually good!!

Characters: there's lots of them and they all act good. Take careful not of Phillip Seymour Hoffman who just acted his ass off! He made me proud to be one of the chubby army! See, we can kick ass too! On a side note, pay close attention to Cruise's encounter with his IMF leader guy in the convenience store and tell me there wasn't a healthy dose of sexual chemistry there! haha Seriously though, everyone gave a solid performance, no holes here. (Oh yeah, and Shaun from Shaun of the Dead is in it too! Bonus!)

Story: Hunt (Cruise) takes a mission to save a co-agent which leads him to hunting down a black market arms dealer. Plot twists ensue and before we know it, Hunt is the bad guy and doing everything he can to get a powerful weapon in order to trade it for his kidnapped wife. The story travels at 100 mph and never stops for a breather. No down time at all here, which is exactly how a summer blockbuster should be!

Fun Factor: Okay, so far we've got great characters, a very solid story, and a ton of twists to keep the audience enthralled... what did you think I would say here?! Grab yourself some popcorn and enjoy the ride.

It's good. It's fun. It's exactly the aort of stuff that makes summer movies fun. Arnold and Sly would be proud. Nice work.

8.5/10 (Summer Curve) Side Recommendations: The first Mission Impossible & Any other good summer flick.
