Here we go again... Action Wild Zero. Ever wonder what Japan must be like? What with them ingesting so much of the American mythos: rock 'n roll, movie trends, and style, and then combining that with their kookie way of thinking? I give you Wild Zero! It's just your average movie about a badass Rock 'n Roll/Punk band, who all happen to be heavily armed, as they take on an army of zombies and aliens. Oh yeah, and it just gets weirder from there. Think Morpheus is the only hard cat that can take out a large vehicle with a sword? Wait until you see what Guitar Wolf can do to a star destroyer with just a katana! Ghost Dog, Way of the Samurai. Not the most whacky movie of all time, and maybe you're already asking yourself how a chubby black guy could be a samurai warrior? Well.... he just is and it'll take no time at all before he manages to convince you of that fact. It's the realization and application of the samurai code in modern times that really caught me off guard. I'd really advise anyone as swept up by asian culture as I am to at least give this one a rental. Horror A Tale of Two Sisters. With the recent debacle that was Silent Hill (yeah I know it looked incredible and had some brilliant monsters, but I've always been the kind of person that hates it when people try to justify the existance of a movie with, "at least it had good special effects". That kind of thinking is the exact reason why we have so many pieces of garbage being released today, but more on that later).... so as I was saying... I was really craving something genuinely scary, and that's exactly what I found in Tale. Essentially what we have here is your run of the mill haunted house story, but then the plot evolves and turns on its head. Check it out if you have the means. It scared the crap out of, and I'm talking the real "chill" scares and not just those cheap jump moments (though it had its fair share of them too). Land of the Dead. Now I realize that the other flicks I've been recommending have all been a little outside of the mainstream, but this is really just one I've got to turn you on to again. I know I was overly critical about this flick when it first came out, but that's really because I'd come to expect so much more out of Romero than this. I was holding Land up to one of the greatest horror movies of all times, Dawn of the Dead. That being said, I watched it again, recently, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. See it again or watch it for the first time, just do yourself a favor and forget all that you know about zombie flicks, just see it, and enjoy it. |
